From their love of fatty blubber to their massive paws, polar bears are extraordinary creatures, equipped with many unique adaptations that allow them to survive in the Arctic. In celebration of Polar Bear Week, here are 5 intriguing facts about what makes polar bears so remarkable.
1. Sea Ice Is Their True Home
Polar bears depend on Arctic sea ice for survival, a habitat that is rapidly shrinking as global temperatures rise. They use the ice as a platform for hunting seals, mating, traveling, and sometimes even for denning. Polar bears inhabit the circumpolar Arctic across five countries: Canada, the United States, Russia, Norway, and Greenland. Canada holds the largest population, accounting for about two-thirds of all polar bears. (For clarity, polar bears do not live in Antarctica; that’s home to penguins!)
2. Polar Bears Are Massive
Polar bears are the largest species among the eight bear types. Adult males usually weigh between 350 and over 600 kilograms (775 to more than 1,300 pounds), while females are smaller, generally weighing 150 to 290 kilograms (330 to 650 pounds). Scientists measure a bear’s height at the shoulder when it’s on all fours, typically ranging from 1 to 1.5 meters (3.3 to 5 feet) for adults. When standing upright on their hind legs, adult males can exceed three meters (10 feet) in height!
3. Polar Bears Are Exceptional Travelers
Polar bears are among the most far-ranging four-legged animals, capable of traveling over 3,000 kilometers per month. Their home ranges can exceed 600,000 square kilometers in a year—larger than California or the entire Yukon territory! Satellite tracking has allowed scientists to follow the extensive movements of these amazing wanderers.
4. Cubs Are Born in Snow-Covered Dens
Pregnant females dig dens in the fall to give birth and nurse their young, after feeding through the winter and the spring seal-pupping season. The entrance of the den is covered with snow, hiding it from view. The mother emerges in spring with her cubs to head to the sea ice to hunt seals—sometimes going up to eight months without eating, an incredible feat of endurance.
5. Rapid Growth of Polar Bear Cubs
Newborn cubs weigh only about 500 grams (1–1.5 pounds) but grow rapidly, increasing more than 20 times their birth weight in just a few months. By the time the family reaches the sea ice in early spring, the cubs often weigh 11–14 kilograms (25–30 pounds) at just two to three months old. Polar bear milk is extremely rich, containing around 31 percent fat at birth, providing the high-calorie nutrition necessary for this fast growth.
