1. Venus of Willendorf - 28,000–25,000 BC

The Venus of Willendorf—also known as the Woman of Willendorf or Naked Woman—is a female figurine from the Upper Paleolithic era, unearthed in 1908 in Willendorf, Austria. Carved from limestone tinted with red ochre pigment, the figurine dates back to approximately 28,000–25,000 BC. It is diminutive, standing just 11.1 centimeters tall.
Some scientists hypothesize it might have been a self-portrait created by a woman. It stands as the most renowned among numerous artifacts from the Stone Age.

2. Bust of Nefertiti - 1,345 BC

Nefertiti (meaning “the beautiful one has arrived”) was the great royal wife of Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten during the 14th century BC.
This bust has symbolized feminine beauty ever since its discovery in 1912 within the ruins of Amarna, the capital city built by the pharaoh. Though the bust bears no inscriptions, it is unmistakably Nefertiti due to the distinctive crown she wears—a headdress featured in other depictions of the queen.
The Egyptian government’s repeated requests to Berlin’s Neues Museum for the official return of the bust have sparked high tensions between the two nations ever since. Egypt has even begun challenging Germany’s ownership of antiquities by imposing sanctions.

 3 .The Terracotta Army - 210-209 BC

The Terracotta Army is perhaps one of the most astonishing archaeological finds. It consists of a vast collection of clay statues buried in three massive tombs near the mausoleum of Shi Huang, the young emperor obsessed with achieving immortality.
The army of figures was created to safeguard the emperor in the afterlife. It comprises over 8,000 soldiers equipped with real weapons, along with 670 horses and roughly 130 chariots. Each statue is life-sized, though actual heights vary according to military rank.
The first emperor envisioned an underground realm that would mirror his earthly existence after death.

4. The Great Sphinx of Giza - 7,000 BC

The Great Sphinx is one of the world’s most famous monuments—a colossal limestone statue. The figure depicts a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human.
Among the largest sculptures on Earth, the Great Sphinx measures approximately 73 meters long and 20 meters high. It was carved from a single block of limestone. Discovered pigments suggest the entire surface was originally painted. Archaeologists estimate it would have taken about three years to construct using stone hammers and copper chisels.
Recent studies indicate the Sphinx was built around 7,000 BC, implying it was the work of an advanced civilization predating the ancient Egyptians.

5. Venus de Milo - 130-100 BC

This beautiful female figure—likely representing the goddess Aphrodite—has captivated art enthusiasts since its discovery on the island of Melos in 1820.
The Marquis de Rivière presented the statue to King Louis XVIII, who donated it to the Louvre the following year. It gained instant renown.
The goddess is wrapped in a veil of mystery, with an enigmatic demeanor. Missing marble fragments and the lack of identifying attributes complicate its restoration and precise identification.
It is believed the master sculptor Alexandros created this masterpiece between 130 and 100 BC. The inscription on the pedestal that named him as the creator of the Venus de Milo was lost nearly 200 years ago.
Today, it is admired for its imperfection; paradoxically, it is the absence of arms that lends the piece a unique beauty.

6. The Pietà - 1499 AD

The Pietà was commissioned by a French cardinal for his funeral. He hired the famous artist to create a tomb monument depicting a popular scene in European art at the time: the tragic moment when the Virgin Mary lowers her son Jesus from the cross.
Michelangelo stated that the block of marble he worked with was the most “perfect” he had ever used, and that the Pietà was his most refined creation.
Many consider the Pietà Michelangelo’s greatest work, even surpassing David and the Sistine Chapel ceiling.
During its restoration, a hidden signature was found on the Virgin’s left hand—a subtle “M” believed to stand for Michelangelo.
The statue currently resides in St. Peter’s Basilica, where it was moved in the mid-18th century.

7. Laocoön and His Sons - 2nd century BC

The scene of Laocoön and His Sons being attacked by snakes is perhaps the most famous sculpture of ancient Rome.
Regarding the Greek myth that inspired the sculpture, there are multiple versions; the identity of the god who sent the attack is unclear, as it is attributed to three deities: Athena, Poseidon, and Apollo.
Laocoön tried to warn Troy’s leaders not to bring the wooden horse left on the beach into the city, sensing it was a trap. As punishment for his interference, one of the gods sent the giant sea serpents Porces and Chariboea to attack him and his two sons.
Today, this magnificent sculpture is on display in the Vatican.

8. David by Michelangelo - 1501-1504 AD

Michelangelo’s David is one of the artist’s most recognizable works and has become one of the most famous pieces in the art world.
The biblical hero is depicted nude, calmly awaiting battle, with a sling in one hand and a stone in the other. His hands and head appear disproportionate to his body—likely intended to create a visual effect for viewers who would see the statue high up in the cathedral.
The story of David and Goliath tells of a teenager who had to face the giant Philistine warrior Goliath, whom no one could defeat with brute strength. David relied on wit and skill to overcome his larger foe, using his famous sling to hurl a stone accurately at Goliath’s head.
The statue was originally meant to be placed on the dome of Florence Cathedral. But as soon as Michelangelo finished it, everyone knew it couldn’t be positioned that high—it had already become a masterpiece meant to be admired up close. Ultimately, it was decided to place it openly in Piazza della Signoria.
It is currently exhibited in Florence’s Accademia Gallery.

9. Perseus with the Head of Medusa by Antonio Canova - 1804-1806 AD

Antonio Canova created this statue twice. The first version, known as Perseus Triumphant, is displayed in the Vatican Museum, while a replica is housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
In the statue, Perseus stands nearly nude, portrayed as a triumphant figure holding Medusa’s snake-haired head aloft in his left hand. The sculpture’s center of gravity is slightly offset by Perseus’s extended arm and Medusa’s head.
In Greek mythology, Perseus was the son of Zeus (Jupiter in Roman mythology). Polydectes, King of Serifos, ordered Perseus to bring him Medusa’s head as a wedding gift. Perseus used a shiny shield given to him by Athena to avoid looking directly at Medusa’s eyes. After a long battle, the hero succeeded in beheading her.
When Perseus returned to King Polydectes, he showed the king Medusa’s head—turning Polydectes to stone. This was Perseus’s revenge after discovering the king had mistreated his mother.

10. Ecstasy of Saint Teresa by Bernini - 1647–1652 AD

Bernini’s Ecstasy of Saint Teresa is widely regarded as the artist’s masterpiece.
Saint Teresa of Ávila, canonized largely for her spiritual visions, was a nun living in 16th-century Spain during the height of the Reformation.
The piece’s sensuality is tied to Saint Teresa’s writings, in which she describes her mystical experiences in almost erotic terms: “… Next to me, on my left, an angel appeared in bodily form … He was not tall but short, and very beautiful; his face was so ablaze that he seemed to be one of the highest angels, who appear to be on fire … In his hands, I saw a great golden lance, and at the iron tip, there seemed to be a point of fire. This plunged into my heart several times … and left me completely consumed by the great love of God. The pain was so severe that it made me utter several moans. The sweetness caused by this intense pain is so extreme that one cannot desire it to cease, nor is the soul satisfied with anything but God. This is not a physical pain but a spiritual one, although the body shares in it, even to a considerable degree …”.
