Overview & Taxonomy
The common dolphin was historically divided into two types (short-beaked and long-beaked).
More recent genetic and morphological studies suggest they may in fact constitute a single species with several subspecies, as there is substantial variation across their broad range.
IUCN Status: Least Concern globally
However, particular subpopulations are more at risk:
The Mediterranean subpopulation is listed as Endangered
The Black Sea subspecies (D. d. ponticus) is classified as Vulnerable
Appearance & Identification
Common dolphins have a distinctive hourglass coloration on their sides: • Dark dorsal / back region • Ahead of the dorsal fin: a patch of yellow on the flanks • Behind the dorsal fin: white region on the lower flanks
Color patterning makes them quite striking and relatively easy to distinguish from other dolphin species in many waters.
The short-beaked form tends to be more robust (stockier), with a more rounded melon (forehead), whereas the long-beaked form is, as the name suggests, a bit more elongated in the rostrum (beak)
Behavior & Social Structure
Highly social & gregarious: commonly travel in groups (“pods”) of 10–50 individuals, though mega-pods of hundreds or even thousands have been documented
They are agile and acrobatic: often seen breaching, riding bow waves, or performing aerial displays
They sometimes “bow-ride” boats or vessels, and may follow the wakes of larger whales or ships
Cooperative feeding behavior: they sometimes coordinate with podmates to herd schooling fish into “bait balls,” making them easier to catch
Diet & Feeding
Their diet is varied, mainly consisting of midwater schooling fish (such as mackerel, herring) and squid
They may switch prey based on availability and season; flexibility in diet helps them exploit a variety of marine habitats
Distribution & Habitat
Found in tropical to temperate waters across much of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans
Occur in both coastal and offshore zones, and also in enclosed seas (e.g. the Mediterranean, the Black Sea)
Some subpopulations are relatively localized (e.g. Mediterranean, Black Sea), sometimes with limited gene flow to other populations
Threats & Conservation
Bycatch / accidental entanglement in fishing gear is a major threat throughout their range
Targeted hunting: in some regions, they are still hunted for meat or other uses
Pollution: chemical pollution, plastic pollution, noise, and ecosystem degradation all affect their health and prey availability
Vulnerable subpopulations: as noted earlier, some local groups like those in the Mediterranean or Black Sea have much smaller ranges and face higher risk statuses
