Proboscis monkeys are indigenous to the island of Borneo.
They can be found in the territories of Brunei, Indonesia, and Malaysia—three countries that share ownership of different regions on the island. These primates favor coastal and lowland habitats like swamps and river deltas. As arboreal creatures, they spend most of their time in forests with easy access to fresh water, moving quadrupedally across tree branches and often leaping to cover long distances.

Also called long-nosed monkeys, proboscis monkeys get their common name from their unusually large nasal structure.
This feature is their most defining characteristic, though its size and shape vary greatly by sex and age. Males boast the iconic large nose that symbolizes the species—some growing up to nearly 4 inches long, extending below the mouth. Females have noticeably smaller noses, while young monkeys sport upturned ones.

Proboscis monkeys rank among the largest monkey species native to Asia.
Males typically measure 26 to 30 inches in length and weigh between 35 and 48 pounds, with the largest individuals reaching up to 66 pounds. Females are significantly smaller, averaging 21 to 24 inches long and 15 to 26 pounds in weight. Unlike many large primates that people associate with hominids like orangutans or gorillas, proboscis monkeys stand out as impressive members of the monkey family.
7. A Diverse Plant-Based Diet
Proboscis monkeys are primarily herbivores, classified as frugivores and folivores, meaning they feed mostly on fruits and leaves.
They have a preference for unripe fruits and mature leaves, but they are also opportunistic omnivores that occasionally eat seeds and insects. Their diet shifts with the seasons—they consume more fruit in the first half of the year and more leaves in the second half. They possess large, protruding stomachs specially adapted to digest their diet rich in unripe fruit.

While many monkeys live in large social groups, proboscis monkeys exhibit varied social behaviors. Most commonly, they form groups consisting of one alpha male, several females, and their offspring. All-male groups are also common, and some individuals—especially males—prefer a solitary existence. Unlike territorial primate species, proboscis monkey groups often overlap in their ranges without conflict.

Both sexes have an average lifespan of about 20 years, spending roughly three-quarters of their lives as adults—mirroring the human life cycle in this regard.

Proboscis monkeys are known for their diverse range of vocal communications, including honks, calls, roars, and howls.
Each sound serves a specific purpose: males honk to assert their status within a group, they emit distinct alarm calls, and use unique vocalizations when interacting with infants. Females produce characteristic calls when angry. Beyond verbal communication, they also use nonverbal cues like baring teeth, shaking branches, and leaping to convey messages.

Proboscis monkeys face numerous threats that have led to their endangered status.
Natural predators include crocodiles, clouded leopards, and pythons, but human activities pose even greater risks—they are hunted for their meat and for use in traditional Chinese medicine. Habitat destruction is another critical threat: deforestation for agriculture has reduced their already limited range (confined to Borneo) by nearly 50% over the past 40 years. As a result, the IUCN has listed proboscis monkeys as Endangered.
