16 Spectacular Destinations for Stargazing in 2025
Experience the cosmos in all its brilliance at these exceptionally dark locations worldwide.
There are few experiences as humbling and awe-inspiring as gazing up at a night sky filled with stars, planets, and constellations. Yet, truly dark skies are increasingly rare. This is where organizations like DarkSky play a vital role. Established in 1988 as the International Dark-Sky Association, it works to safeguard the world’s darkest places from light pollution and has certified over 200 such sites. UNESCO also designates certain Starlight Reserves as part of its Astronomical Heritage list.
These remarkable stargazing destinations offer more than celestial views—they invite us to learn about the universe and reconnect with our planet. From the deserts of Namibia to the national parks of the United States, here are 16 unforgettable places to witness the night sky.

NamibRand Nature Reserve, Namibia

Renowned as one of the darkest yet accessible places on Earth, NamibRand lies more than 60 miles from the nearest settlements. This nearly 500,000-acre reserve in southwestern Namibia is overseen by the NaDEET Center, which promotes environmental education. Visitors can stay at Wolwedans camps and lodges for a sustainable stargazing experience under pristine skies.

Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

Famed for its striking hoodoo rock formations, Bryce Canyon also offers some of the clearest night skies in the U.S. Less crowded than nearby parks, it provides ample space for stargazing and astronomy programs led by park rangers. On clear nights, you can see the Milky Way arch from horizon to horizon, along with planets like Venus and Jupiter.

Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, New Zealand

Established in 2012 on New Zealand’s South Island, this is one of only 22 Dark Sky Reserves worldwide. The area is deeply significant to the Māori people, who have long incorporated celestial navigation into their culture. Visitors can join guided tours at the Mt. John Observatory or the Lake Tekapo Earth and Sky Centre to see the Southern Cross, the Magellanic Clouds, and even the aurora australis.

La Palma and Tenerife, Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are home to three Starlight Reserves recognized by UNESCO. La Palma and Tenerife, in particular, offer exceptional astro-tourism opportunities with multiple observatories run by the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias. Prime stargazing locations include Garajonay Summit and San Bartolo Mountain on La Palma, and Guajara Mountain on Tenerife. Remember to bring warm clothing—higher elevations can be chilly.

Mauna Kea, Hawaiʻi

The summit of Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano on the Big Island, offers some of the best stargazing in the Pacific. The Onizuka Center for International Astronomy provides public programs midway up the mountain. Four-wheel-drive vehicles or guided tours are required to reach the summit. Acclimatization to the high altitude is essential, and warm layers are recommended.

Sagarmatha National Park, Nepal

Home to Mount Everest, this UNESCO World Heritage site offers more than high-altitude trekking. Its remote location and high elevation make it ideal for stargazing. Even at lower altitudes, the night sky here is brilliantly clear, with countless stars set against the silhouette of the world’s tallest peaks.

Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve, Ireland

Located along the Wild Atlantic Way on the Iveragh Peninsula, this Gold Tier Dark Sky Reserve is one of the best places in Europe for stargazing. Despite several small villages within its bounds, the reserve remains remarkably free from light pollution. A variety of local accommodations make it easy to enjoy the area’s natural darkness.

Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska

Encompassing six million acres of wilderness, Denali is far from any major sources of light pollution. Visitors can enjoy stunning views of the stars, planets, and frequent aurora borealis displays, especially outside the summer months when daylight hours are shorter.

Atacama Desert and Elqui Valley, Chile

Northern Chile’s high altitude, dry climate, and minimal light pollution make it a world-class stargazing destination. The Elqui Valley—also known for its wine—was designated the world’s first International Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2015. The town of San Pedro de Atacama offers a range of lodging options and easy access to the desert’s celestial wonders.

Uluru, Australia

The Sounds of Silence tour at Ayers Rock Resort offers a unique combination of fine dining and stargazing against the backdrop of Uluru and Kata Tjuta. A resident astronomer helps guests navigate the southern night sky and shares Aboriginal astronomical traditions. Family-friendly tours are also available.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve, Colorado

This park is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America and boasts exceptionally dark, clear skies. Ranger-led programs often include astronomy talks and stargazing sessions. The Milky Way is easily visible on most nights.

Death Valley National Park, California and Nevada

Death Valley’s extreme depth and isolation make it one of the best stargazing sites in the U.S. The park hosts an annual dark sky festival in partnership with NASA, and rangers lead nightly programs at sites like Zabriskie Point and Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes.

Great Basin National Park, Nevada

Shielded by mountain ranges from city lights, Great Basin is among the most remote national parks in the contiguous U.S. The Nevada Northern Railway offers a seasonal “Star Train” from Ely, Nevada, bringing visitors into the park for guided stargazing experiences.

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Minnesota

This million-acre wilderness became a Dark Sky Sanctuary in 2020. Its lack of development and northern location make it ideal for viewing the Milky Way, planets, and winter auroras. Canoeing by day and stargazing by night offer a perfect blend of adventure and tranquility.

Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve, Texas and Mexico

Straddling the U.S.–Mexico border, this 9-million-acre reserve is the first binational dark sky site in the world. Visitors can join ranger-led astronomy programs or visit the McDonald Observatory in Texas. The night skies here are among the darkest in North America.

Wadi Rum, Jordan

The dramatic desert landscape of Wadi Rum has served as a filming location for numerous movies, but its night skies are the real star. Extremely remote and free from light pollution, it offers unparalleled views of the Milky Way. Overnight stays in Bedouin camps provide cultural context and a truly immersive experience.
