Regional Observations
New Zealand: Early European settlers noted that New Zealand forests had a loud dawn chorus. However, this is no longer as prominent due to extensive loss of forests and the introduction of bird predators and competing species.
United Kingdom: In the UK, the dawn chorus may begin as early as 3 a.m. in early summer.
United States: The dawn chorus can also be heard in various parts of the United States, particularly in areas with rich bird populations.
International Dawn Chorus Day
An annual event called International Dawn Chorus Day is held on the first Sunday in May. On this day, the public is encouraged to rise early to listen to bird songs at organized events. The first such event was held in 1987 at Moseley Bog in Birmingham, England, organized by the Urban Wildlife Trust (now The Wildlife Trust for Birmingham and the Black Country).
